Summary Information
(last updated on: 10/22/2019 9:00:05 AM)
The Alkali Lake Chemical Waste Disposal site is in Lake County, Oregon, about 60 miles north of Lakeview. The main disposal area occupies about 10 acres just west of Alkali Lake. The area is dry most of the year, as are most nearby surface water bodies. About 25,000 drums of herbicide manufacturing waste were disposed of here between 1969 and 1971. In 1976, the drums were crushed on the site and covered with soil.
Despite the large quantity of toxic materials, the site does not present a significant risk to human health or the environment because the waste has been buried and fenced, and the site is remote--about 30 miles from the nearest town. DEQ maintains more than 50 groundwater monitoring wells in the area to test for contamination. Regular testing since the 1990s shows the contamination remains contained within the original area and is not spreading. DEQ oversaw a risk assessment of the site in 2005, which concluded the site does not present a significant risk to people or wildlife as long as current safeguards are maintained.
