For more information about this project, see DEQ's Willamette River Sediment Study web page (https://www.oregon.gov/deq/Hazards-and-Cleanup/CleanupSites/Pages/Willamette-River.aspx).
Two phases of sediment investigation were completed (2009 and 2011) between RM 12 and 16 in the Downtown Reach of the Willamette River. Following the initial investigations, additional characterization resulted in remedial actions at Ross Island RM15, PGE Station L RM13.3E, Zidell RM 13.5 to 14.2W, PGE RM13.1E, PGE RM13.5E, and along the CD Greenway Riverbank at RM14W. A remedial action is planned for summer 2020 at Portland Gas Manufacturing site between RM 12.1 and 12.3W.
DEQ is working with several parties to complete additional investigations underway, including ODOT and the City of Portland for RM 12.1E and RM12.7E. The City has also conducted an investigation adjacent to City OF at RM 16.7E and City outfalls within the Willamette Park to follow up on PCB detections discovered in bass tissue. DEQ performed an upriver investigation at RM 16.5W under the Orphan program, in the vicinity of the Sellwood Bridge and finally, DEQ is also conducting an investigation on the opposite side of the River, near RM 16.5E, adjacent to the Sellwood Park.
