The Bend Demolition Landfill site consists of approximately 72 acres located off of SW Simpson Road between Mt Washington Drive and SW Century Drive in Bend.
Prior to 1972, the site was used as a pumice mine. The landfill operation began in 1972, using abandoned pumice trenches. The site is owned and was operated by the Deschutes County Department of Public Works only for demolition, construction debris, industrial wood wastes, tires, and similar non-putrescible solid wastes.
The site has been closed since 1995 and methane gas generation is currently monitored by the County and DEQ under Solid Waste Permit #215.
In March 2018, DEQ entered into a Prospective Purchaser Agreement with Oregon Statue University, after which OSU purchased the landfill property and began screening and removing waste in preparation for future construction on the landfill related to expansion of the Cascades campus. The inital phase of work on the landfill was completed in spring 2020.
