DEQ Issues $5,500 Penalty to Galvanizers Company for Hazardous Waste Violation in NW Portland

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has issued a $5,500 penalty to Galvanizers Company for a hazardous waste violation at its steel galvanizing facility at 2406 NW 30th Ave. in Portland. DEQ also cited the company, without penalty, for other hazardous and universal waste violations found during a DEQ inspection.

DEQ issued the penalty to the company for failing to make a hazardous waste determination on paint that Galvanizers determined was no longer needed. DEQ had cited and penalized Galvanizers for violations in 2004 and 2007.

Properly characterizing hazardous waste is key to managing hazardous wastes safely to protect the environment and public health.

The company has until May 11 to pay or appeal the penalty.
