Business Packaging Waste Prevention Project

Evaluation Report

Between 2002 and 2005, the Oregon DEQ’s Solid Waste Section conducted a pilot project to reduce the use and waste of packaging materials. The project was co-funded by Metro and the US EPA. Over the course of the project, participating businesses reduced their use of packaging by an estimated 493 tons/year, with resulting financial savings in excess of $994,000 annually. In addition to direct work with businesses, the project also undertook a life cycle inventory analysis of retail mail-order packaging and developed a packaging waste prevention web site with case studies, best practices, evaluation checklists, and other tools for businesses.
