Composting Program

Survey of Home Compost Bin Recipients in La Grande, Oregon

In 2001, the City of La Grande sold 311 compost bins to residents to encourage home composting. The City used funds from a solid waste reduction grant from DEQ to sell the bins at reduced cost. The next year, bin purchasers were surveyed by the City and DEQ to determine how many were still using their bin, how bin users changed yard debris management practices, if the bins helped reduce outdoor burning, how much material the bins diverted from the landfill, any problems that households had with the bins, overall satisfaction, and level of interest in additional information. This report summarizes the results of the survey.
