Union Pacific Railyard Cleanup, Eugene - Soil Vapor Extraction Pilot TestIn 2008, UPRR conducted a Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) pilot study to
evaluate how vapors move in soil beneath the Trainsong neighborhood, and
whether SVE could be used effectively to lower soil gas concentrations.
The SVE pilot study indicated that clay-rich soils beneath the study
area greatly reduce the movement of air (and any possible contaminants
in the air). Sand and gravel zones that lay deeper beneath the clay,
however, can transmit vapor relatively easily, as these soil types are
more permeable. While SVE may be effective to control vapor migration in
the sand and gravel zone, DEQ will not require UPRR to implement SVE to
lower soil gas concentration at this time, because soil gas levels have
dropped during the past several years and because vapor barriers have
been installed in potentially impacted homes. |
