Site SummaryBlack Butte Mine was one of the largest mercury mines in Oregon. Several different owners operated the mine at various times between the 1890s and the late 1960s. The mine and about 300,000 cubic yards of tailings are above Cottage Grove Reservoir next to Dennis Creek, a tributary to the Coast Fork of the Willamette River. [more...] Current Documents and Supporting InformationThe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency finalized the Removal Report which documents excavation, sloping, and revegetation work they completed in August of 2007. The report presents recommendations for additional removal of highly contaminated soil being eroded by Furnace Creek. DEQ conducted a surface water assessment in April 2007, and in June of 2008 to determine the relative mercury contribution from the Mine related to the natural contribution from the surrounding watershed.
