Union Pacific Railyard Cleanup, Eugene - Vapor Intrusion into Neighborhood Areas

Solvent contaminants in groundwater can volatize and move upward through soil and possibly impact structures above contaminated groundwater. In 2011 DEQ continued to carefully evaluate data that have been collected at the site and in the Trainsong and River Road areas.

River Road
The levels of contaminants in groundwater in the River Road area should not pose a threat to air quality in homes. The groundwater will continue to be monitored on a regular basis.

Trainsong
In 2006 and 2007 sampling data indicated that vapor intrusion could possibly be impacting a small number of residents in Trainsong nearest the Railyard. In response to this concern, Union Pacific installed vapor barriers beneath nine residences. Since then, contaminant levels in soil vapor have dropped dramatically, due to the success of groundwater cleanup actions conducted nearby on the rail yard. DEQ and Oregon Public Health Division believe there is currently no health risk to residents in the Trainsong neighborhood due to soil vapors, and is no longer requiring vapor barriers beneath any homes in Trainsong. Monitoring of groundwater will continue regularly to evaluate the vapor intrusion threat.
