Marine Debris Management

Need to report marine debris you’ve spotted on an Oregon beach? Call 211 now or send an email to beach.debris@state.or.us. Please provide the location, date, a description and a photo if possible.

Oregon's Department of Environmental Quality and the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department serve as lead agencies for Oregon’s efforts to monitor beaches and cleanup debris related to the tsunami that struck Japan in 2011.

DEQ is responsible for directing the cleanup of oil and hazardous materials from Oregon’s beaches and across the state. Oregon Parks, with support from a host of volunteer organizations, residents and beach-goers, manages the traditional cleanup of non-hazardous materials from Oregon’s beaches.

The Joint Tsunami Marine Debris Task Force

Led by the federal National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency, the Joint Tsunami Marine Debris Task Force is a region-wide coalition of federal, state and local agencies and jurisdictions dedicated to sharing efforts and resources to address marine debris along the Pacific coast.

Reporting potentially hazardous materials

Examples include oil or chemical drums, gas cans, propane tanks or other types of containers that may contain toxic materials.

If you find something on a beach in Oregon and you suspect it may contain hazardous materials do not touch the item or attempt to move it!

Please call Oregon’s Marine Debris hotline at 211 immediately to report debris you suspect may be hazardous. Provide as much information as possible. You may also call 1-800-OILS-911 or the National Response Center at 1-800-424-8802 to report the item.
