Willamette Basin Mercury Study

There are currently ten areas in the Willamette Basin listed for mercury on Oregon's list of impaired waterbodies. The listings extend from the Cottage Grove and Dorena Reservoirs in the Coast Fork Subbasin to the mouth of the Willamette River. DEQ based these mercury listings on health advisories issued by Oregon Health Authority warning against consuming fish in these areas.

Study Objectives

DEQ's Willamette Basin Mercury Study addresses the 303(d) listings for mercury in the Willamette Basin and meets the following objectives:

  1. Describes the relationship between mercury in fish tissue and mercury in the water column for the development of a site-specific bioaccumulation factor.
  2. Describes the relationship between methylmercury in water and total mercury in water and sediment.
  3. Identifies and quantifies sources of mercury and how much mercury those sources produce in the Willamette River system.
