Greenhouse Gas Emissions ReportedThis page provides a summary of greenhouse gas emissions collected under Oregon's greenhouse gas reporting program. To learn more about the program, please see the greenhouse gas reporting homepage. At this time, reported data are available from stationary sources holding air quality permits and natural gas suppliers. DEQ is also collecting data from electricity suppliers and additional fuel distributor categories and plans to make that information available later in 2011. Electricity suppliers and fuel distributors supply products into the economy that, when generated or combusted, released, or oxidized, result in greenhouse gas emissions. The emissions do not necessarily take place at the suppliers’ facilities. The data collected do not represent a comprehensive summary of all of Oregon's greenhouse gas emissions. For example, The data reported by individual stationary sources includes direct emissions; facilities do not report indirect emissions or any carbon offsets pursued by the facility. Sources such as smaller commercial facilities and agricultural operations are not included. Emissions associated with goods and services consumed in Oregon but produced elsewhere are also not included. DEQ intends to work with other agencies to analyze the data and help produce a comprehensive report of Oregon’s greenhouse gas emissions. 2010 Greenhouse Gas Emissions The greenhouse gas emissions reported to DEQ for the 2010 calendar year are provided below. Currently, DEQ has emissions data for permitted facilities and natural gas suppliers. DEQ will publish data for additional categories as it becomes available. Greenhouse gas emissions are described in metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (mtCO2e). Carbon dioxide equivalents are a way to measure total greenhouse gases from an emission source. There are six greenhouse gases being reported to DEQ including carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, and sulfur hexafluoride. Because these gases have varying heat-trapping abilities and atmospheric lifetimes, each is assigned a global warming potential so that its emissions can be compared to other greenhouse gases. Carbon dioxide has a global warming potential of 1 since it is the baseline unit to which all other greenhouse gases are compared. The other greenhouse gases have a carbon dioxide equivalency reflected as the concentration of carbon dioxide that would cause the same level of radiative forcing; their carbon dioxide equivalent is obtained by multiplying the quantity of the gas by its global warming potential. Facilities with Air Quality PermitsBelow is a table listing the greenhouse gas emissions from each facility holding an air quality permit that emitted at least 2,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents. This category includes facilities with a variety of industrial processes, such as power generation, cement production and glass manufacturing. Natural Gas SuppliersBelow is a table listing the greenhouse gas emissions reported by companies supplying natural gas to end users in Oregon.
2009 Greenhouse Gas Emissions In 2009, Oregon's greenhouse gas reporting applied only to facilities that held air quality permits. Below is a table listing the greenhouse gas emissions reported to DEQ for the 2009 calendar year. 2009 data is not directly comparable to emissions reported for later years because DEQ updated the reporting protocols after 2009 to include additional emission sources and align Oregon's protocols with the federal program. |
